- A myth claimed Michael Jackson patented a special shoe device to perform his iconic anti-gravity lean. While a patent was later filed for a shoe mechanism to aid the move, the original was performed with wires and practice.
- Sharp-eyed viewers claim to see the ghost of a young boy, supposedly a resident of the cemetery where it was filmed, in the background of the 'Thriller' music video. It is likely a crew member or trick of the light.
- Michael Jackson confirmed the song was inspired by real letters from a woman who claimed he was the father of one of her twins. He had never met her.
- It is widely believed Michael Jackson bleached his skin to appear white. In reality, he had vitiligo, a medical condition that causes loss of skin pigmentation, which he tried to manage with makeup and lightening treatments.
